A MAC carrier capable/optimised merchant vessel.

A MAC carrier capable/optimised merchant vessel. It is 1932 and money is tight. You can see what is needed and by when. In light of the first naval treaty, you are limited by type as well as funds....

Re: A MAC carrier capable/optimised merchant vessel.

The one big problem with the historical MAC design is that it is very basic and limited vessel for the 1930s, and possesses only a fraction of the capabilities being looked for by the RN at the time....

Re: A MAC carrier capable/optimised merchant vessel.

Thanks to you all. Some really interesting proposals. I like the idea of working out how to do it pre-war for many more conversions later. A Union Castle liner, a grainer and an oiler as prototypes...

Re: A MAC carrier capable/optimised merchant vessel.

Conversion work might be done along the lines of the AMC programme. This 'produced' over 50 extra 'cruisers' for the RN in about 6 months from the start of WW2. You identify a number of suitable...

Re: A MAC carrier capable/optimised merchant vessel.

A MAC needs a vessel of ~433⅓’ x 56¾’ x 25’; 8k tons gross, ideally 2 shafts and 20kn/diesel power (diesel being important so the pre-war owner can operate at 12kn or less efficiently); range of ~3k...

Due to the obvious fire risk the RN decided only to operate oiler MAC when loaded with crude oil, not process POL products.  They also lacked a hanger, and so had the permanent deck park for 3...

Complete two or three prototypes as RFAs. If you use fleet tankers they have to carry fuel products, fire risk or not and the train having its own air cover sounds useful. Doesn't have to be a...

Re: A MAC carrier capable/optimised merchant vessel.

Rather than try converting these ships in peacetime, wait until a war comes along.  Much like the AMCsIn that way you don't show your hand to opponents.  Stockpile 20-30 'conversion' kits and just...

Re: A MAC carrier capable/optimised merchant vessel.

AMCs are a known job. I doubt anyone would be too happy planning your mid ocean air cover on an unproven concept.
